“Not” Good Enough

I admit, simply writing those words in the title of this here

Letter/email/infotainment piece really   gives me a bit of an

Arousal factor that makes my spine and maybe something else

A little lower tingle just a little.

When I used to hear those words, I would go to a really dark place

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been called some pretty nasty things

But for some reason, when someone said I was not good enough

I would always get triggered.

But after awhile, I don’t know if it’s age, or you just start caring less

Or both

But I eventually came to the conclusion that the more you try to be

Good enough for everybody, the less you are good enough for somebody.

But the problem is that most of us don’t end up realizing that fact until

You’ve banged your head up against the wall over 100 times trying to get

Everyone to like you only to eventually take a brief moment to look around

To everyone else doing exactly the same…

When things are down, we all need someone to look up to.

And I apparently became that person to a young 20 year old in West Philly

I met this young lad a little while back.

He actually stopped me at a stop light while he was standing

In front of a store in West Philly know for drug deals.

He tells me a little about himself and he tells me that he sees

That I might be able to help him “get out of the hood” as he said.

So in one of our first meetings, we talked about “alternative sources of income”

And we talked about it for a few months after that until he came up with an idea

Fast forward 4 months later

That kid standing on the corner trying to sell dreams

To pay rent is now taking his first trip on a plane

To network in ways that he never thought possible

I think back to when he first asked me to mentor him.

He confessed to me many times that he didn’t think he was good enough.

Hell man, I thought a few times with him, I’m not good enough

Everyone can relate to feeling like you’re not good enough.

But the most important thing you can take from this message is

That sometimes it’s better to at least be “not good enough”

Than to suck so bad that your efforts aren’t even recognized.

Jerry “good enough” Washington

P.S. It’s really important to recognize that we all have feelings of

Inadequacy in some way or another at any given time.

What  I’d like you to consider is that, sometimes others will say

You aren’t good enough, but you have to appreciate that by giving you their attention

They’ve just shown you it just might be that

You aren’t good enough…yet. Talk soon…
